Never Never Modern IV returns—this time to Harry Seidler’s masterwork and extractive icon, Shell House. Students critically unpack the tower’s modernist legacy, tracing its material, financial, and infrastructural lineages while testing adaptive reuse as ecological repair. Through drawings and 1:1 hybrid prototypes, the studio reframes Shell House not as a monument of progress, but as a living system demanding care, circularity, and accountability.

Never (Ever) Modern takes its name from 1991 book ‘we have never been modern’ by Bruno Latour.
The studio like Latour will explore hybrid models in an attempt to challenge architecture’s very own ‘modern Constitution’.
ICI House by Bates Smart Mccutcheon the first curtain wall skyscraper in Australia here plays the part of the quintessential
modernist tower. Thorough integration, and proposition studio Never ever Modern attempts to challenge the socio-political
economic or design reasoning from which ICI was built and present new hybrid models.

This studio took the corporate tower (in this instance, Rialto Tower, Melbourne) and unpack its use as corporate vertical real estate. Critiquing the tower’s role in social, economic and political divisions, participants will propose alternate usages, atmospheres, structures, and programs, with the ultimate aim of critiquing an outdated and exclusionary modernist system.
Students were asked to work individually, each designing interventions in a part or parts of the Rialto Tower. Model-making will be emphasised as a collaborative and key communicative tool, with drawings influenced by those of radical architecture.
