Queer Pedagogy

Landscape Design  2022

Tutors:  Luca Lana

The studio introduced situated ecologies and embedded practices as an alternative framework for working within post-extraction landscapes. Based at the former Beech Forest Quarry and hosted by These Are The Projects, students engaged a rural site shaped by geologic, hydrologic and biologic systems through a multi-day immersion of talks, workshops and hands-on activity.

Framed by discourse on critical ecologies and phenomenological research, participants undertook direct observation, maintenance involvement and 1:1 material experimentation. Rather than idealising the “natural,” the studio fostered situated, participatory responses that acknowledged ongoing interference and ecological negotiation. Field-based interventions informed resolved mid-scale propositions grounded in tectonic precision and lived site experience.

“We had no explanation for this at the time, it was just suggesting that when you cut into the Present the Future leaks out."
